The Open Door: Making the Home a Missional Launchpad
Michael Carter
Acts 16:14-15
Big Idea: Our homes and all we have can be missional launchpads God would use to advance the gospel of the Kingdom of Christ.
Acts 13:46-48 – And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,
“‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” (Is. 49:6)
And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.
“Mission, then, in biblical terms, while it inescapably involves us in planning and action, is not primarily a matter of our activity or our initiative. Mission … is the committed participation of God’s people in the purposes of God for the redemption of the whole creation. The mission is God’s. The marvel is that God invites us to join in.”
Christopher Wright “The Mission of God,”
The Gospel Shared – Faith - Acts 16:14a –
One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God.
The Gospel Dwells – Lived – Acts 16:14b-15a –
The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. And after she was baptized, and her household as well
Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family.
The Gospel Launched – Out
Acts 16:39-40
So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city. So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.
To run and work the law commands,
But gives us neither feet nor hands.
But sweeter news the Gospel brings:
It bids us fly and gives us wings.
