Good Neighbor Outreach

Following the command of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark (12:28-31), Westover has the opportunity to come alongside and minister to refugee and immigrant children and families who live close to Westover Church.  It is our desire to see our neighbors flourish educationally, physically, and spiritually through various ministries designed to meet those needs.  We hope to build relationships, learn from each other, and engage in meaningful dialogue about Christ.

Opportunities

Treehouse - Afterschool tutoring and relationship building for academically at-risk Morehead Elementary students. We match the students one-on-one with tutors and provide reading activities, homework help and a simple meal. Serve as a tutor, on our meal team, or on our transportation team. Tuesdays or Thursdays, 4:15-6:30pm

Beyond Treehouse – Afterschool tutoring and mentoring for Middle School students. Small group format providing homework help and relationship building. Tuesdays or Thursdays, 5:00-6:45pm

ESL – English as a Second Language for adults. Children's activities and homework help. Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30pm

Community Garden –Partnering with our neighbors to share gardening space and techniques (no experience required). The garden is located just down the street from Westover.

Community Healthcare – Serving our community, building relationships and meeting healthcare needs.

Community Soccer– A ministry to middle school and elementary aged kids in our neighborhood.  Each session includes training in core soccer skills and a period of open play.  The goal is to glorify God by enjoying the “beautiful game” with our neighborhood kids and families.  Two six-week seasons (Spring and Fall) are held each year.

Community Basketball – Six week sessions offered twice a year to our elementary and middle school aged kids in our neighborhood.

Morehead Elementary – Serve as a classroom volunteer (1 hour/week) or assist in teacher appreciation events.

Apartment Life – Serve as support and encouragement for our Cares Team couple as they make their home in the Colonial Apartments area and partner with the management team to build community and serve residents by doing things that flow naturally out of the Christian lifestyle, including welcoming new residents, planning monthly social events, and CARE-ing for residents and property staff in times of need.  Help serve and greet during the twice or three times per month events (e.g. Back to school bash, pancake breakfast, etc.).

Camp Allelu – Camp Allelu provides a unique opportunity for high school students who have recently relocated to the U.S. from abroad to experience American culture, build friendships, develop mentor relationships and most importantly, learn about the saving grace extended to us through Christ’s death and resurrection. Serve as camp staff or sponsor a camper. 2018 dates will be announced soon.

Newcomers School - This unique school’s vision: To prepare all Newcomers for successful transition into American Schools, culture, and beyond through challenging academics and language learning by honoring all cultures and heritages, and introducing students to a new cultural environment. Volunteer opportunities include helping to staff the Food Pantry and Clothes Closet.
