Your Cloud of Witnesses July 20, 2018

Like a lot of Westover families, I spent a recent weekend at the Greensboro Aquatic Center for our city meet. It's always a great event (except for my back and backside!).

Most of the time, there are eight swimmers competing at a time. Occasionally there are fewer. One time this weekend, there were only two young swimmers. They were to swim the 50 Free ... swimming one length, and then back.

Well, as they came to the wall, one of the girls did a beautiful turn, but the other swimmer stopped.  I'm not sure why ... perhaps she thought the race was only 25 meters.

As soon as she stopped, the packed crowd shouted in unison, "GO!"  When she hesitated, again the crowded called out "GO!" And with that, she took off. In fact, she almost caught the other swimmer. She didn't win, but as she finished the race, everyone in the crowd let out a great big cheer.

I couldn't help but be reminded that the New Testament speaks to followers of Christ ... about a race that we are to swim (run) with perseverance.  Hebrews 12:1 goes on tell us that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.

I wonder how many of us are like the swimmer who stopped. For whatever reason ... perhaps you're weary, maybe you've lost your focus, perhaps you just wanted to quit, maybe you feel alone.

Can you hear them?

That's the crowd.

The crowd is shouting.

The crowd of fellow believers.

The crowd that has persevered.

"Go!"   "Go!"  "Don't stop now!"

"Your race is marked out for you."  "Go!"

I love the truth that I am not competing with anyone. Instead, I am running the race God has marked out for me. May I encourage you to run the race God has marked out for you?  GO!
