Diversity On Earth As It Will Be In Heaven October 04, 2017
In light of recent events in Charlottesville, it seems our country is moving further and further apart racially. Many times throughout the Bible, God teaches us about His desire for unity. In Revelation 7:9-12, we learn that in heaven there will be people from every tribe, nation and tongue all worshipping God together. How do we move towards that, so that our lives mirror this diversity on earth as it will be in heaven?
Martin Luther King is quoted as saying "Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they cannot communicate; they cannot communicate because they are separated." If we aren't living in true community with our brothers and sisters of different races, we can't know one another, we can't bear one another's burdens, we can't truly love each other.
Westover recently started the Grace & Race team designed to develop maturing followers of Christ through diverse relationships, so that Westover more reflects the diversity we will see in the New Heaven and New Earth. We seek understanding and knowledge from the life experiences from those different than ourselves to overcome the wrongful expectations and hurtful biases we each carry. In this way, we move towards racial reconciliation, coming together in a true community (diverse but also unified in Christ), and we can be an example to others of the diversity on earth as it is in heaven.
As a team, we have intentional time together, to learn from each other over thought-provoking films, discussions, and celebrations of the different cultures represented at Westover. We would love to have you join our community and conversation.
After the events in Charlottesville, Pastor Don encouraged our congregation "If not us, then who?" The Grace & Race team is a great way to help be the change by learning and growing in relationships with people of different cultures. If you would like to be involved with the Grace and Race team please contact Bethany Rouse . Our next event is Sunday, October 8. We will have a potluck and film discussion after church.
