I was talking with a friend over coffee a few months back, catching up on life, family, work, etc. I asked him what he did for his devotional time. He replied, “I wanted to ask you. I feel spiritually dry and am looking for any ideas.” I explained the HEAR Method to him, told him I would send him the steps, and gave him an assignment: Galatians 1. That’s it. I said, “Resolve this week to work through the HEAR steps for Galatians 1 and let’s chat about it.”

A week later, he told me how much he got from just that one exercise, saying he’s seeing things he hadn't noticed before. He went on to finish Galatians. The disciple of Christ hungers and thirsts for God. “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Ps. 119:103). But, it is daunting to hold a Bible and think, “Where do I begin?”

There’s no magic to the HEAR method, but there is power when the Spirit accompanies our intentional surrender to meet with God in His Word. It moves our time with God in His Word from information to formation. It slows us down by asking questions that force us to listen for God to speak. It creates space for the Spirit to shape our hearts, not just our minds.

HEAR is an acronym that guides your time in Scripture:

H – Highlight
Read the passage and highlight a verse or short section that stands out to you.

•  Which verse or phrase stands out to me most?
•  What caught my attention as I read this passage?
•  Is there a word, command, promise, or idea I can’t move past?
•  What feels emphasized or repeated?

E – Explain
In your own words, write what the passage means.

•  What is the author saying to the original audience?
•  What is happening in this passage?
•  What does this passage reveal about God, humanity, or God’s plan?
•  How does this verse fit within the surrounding context?

A – Apply
How could this be applied?

•  What is God inviting me to believe, do, or change?
•  Is there a sin to confess, a truth to trust, or an action to take?
•  How does this passage challenge my attitudes, habits, or priorities?
•  What would obedience look like today or this week?

R – Respond
What will you do? This can be something you commit to do today, or this week, a call to action, a prayer. This is where the rubber meets the road.

•  How do I want to respond to God based on what I’ve read?
•  What do I need to confess, thank God for, or ask Him for?
•  How can I express trust or surrender in light of this passage?

 
You can take a chapter, a handful of verses, or work through a reading plan. HEAR is not the only method, but it is a simple and useful one. Begin today to move information to formation.

New Sermon Series: Heart of Worship

We just celebrated the 50th episode of our Midweek Podcast with some lighthearted “50-themed” trivia—but beneath the fun, this episode launched something much deeper: a church-wide move to strip back our Sunday services to the simple, biblical heart of worship. Over the next four weeks, we’re going to use the Psalms to help us see what genuine worship looks like, how it’s fulfilled in Christ, and how it reshapes us as a people of prayer, obedience, and praise.

In this special conversation, Pastor Kevin Wilson, Pastor Michael Carter, and Caroline Feary shared where we’re headed—and why.

When Simple Things Get Complicated
The episode opened with a simple question:
What’s something basic that you tend to overcomplicate?

Answers ranged from:

• overthinking where to eat or what movie to watch,
• obsessing over protein and macros,
• to the absurd complexity of something as simple as a store return.

From there, the team made an important connection:
The same thing happens in the church.
You see it in Acts—the early church gathering in very simple, essential ways. But over time, our modern church culture has layered on preferences, production, and expectations. None of those are necessarily bad, but they can easily crowd out the heart of what we’re doing.

We can unintentionally make worship more about:

• the experience than the Savior,
• the production than the presence of God,
• our comfort than our response to His mercy.

How Our Hearts Are Being Shaped
Throughout the conversation, the team returned to this idea:
We are always being shaped by something.
Some of those shaping forces are obvious. Others are subtle.

1. Experiences and Traditions

Repeated experiences become traditions. We grow to rely on them—often without realizing it. When those rhythms are removed or changed, we feel the loss, not just of the practice, but of the way it has quietly formed our expectations of worship.

2. Spaces and Buildings

Church architecture itself tells a story and shapes our hearts:

• Historic cathedrals (like Notre Dame) were built for space and transcendence—you walk in and instinctively feel, “God is big. He is bigger than me.”
• Later, church buildings centered around a pulpit, emphasizing the Word preached.
• Today, many churches resemble arenas—built for sound, lights, and a stage. That form quietly teaches us to expect a performance.

We may not consciously think, this building is discipling me, but it is.

3. Media and Production

Outside the church, we’re formed by media and technology:

• Auto-tune and studio perfection have changed our ears. When we hear a natural, uncorrected human voice, it can now sound “off,” even though it’s actually normal.
• Modern worship music can trend toward the highly produced and vocally demanding, which can nudge congregations into becoming spectators more than singers.

As Pastor Kevin put it, our people often walk into church already shaped by what they’ve experienced on the radio, on streaming platforms, and online.

4. Content and Attention Span

Our discipleship habits have also been shaped by an age of pre-processed content:

• We’re used to having truth broken down into short, easily digestible pieces.
• Our capacity for longer, weightier doctrine and sustained attention can suffer.

Even TV and streaming platforms script shows with the assumption that viewers are half-watching while on their phones, constantly re-explaining what’s happening so nobody gets lost.

All of this forms us long before we sit down in a Sunday service.

Why the Psalms, and Why Now?
Our upcoming series is not simply “a series about the Psalms.”
Instead, we’re using the Psalms to recover something deeper:
the core shape of a worshiping heart.

Here’s the guiding idea:
The heart of worship calls us beyond mere ritual and into genuine and simple responses to God’s mercy. This is described in the Psalms, demonstrated in Christ, and produces within God’s people sacrificial service, obedience, prayer, and praise.

Through this series, we want to:

• Listen to how the Psalms describe true worship—honest, raw, God-centered.
• Trace how that heart of worship is fulfilled in Christ—our perfect worshiper and our substitute.
• Be formed into a people marked not just by rituals, but by sacrificial service, obedience, prayer, and praise.

Caroline shared that, as a member of Gen Z, she sees many in her generation longing for:

• Real, genuine worship,
• Deep theology and discipleship,
• And a move away from “just a show” toward something rooted, simple, and honest.

Some are even turning toward more liturgical traditions because they sense that longing being met there. Our hope is that, as we walk through the Psalms together, our church family—across all generations—will experience that same refreshing simplicity and depth in Christ.

What Will Be Different in Our Services?

For four weeks, we’re going to intentionally simplify our Sunday gatherings.
Instead of a long list of elements, we’re going to focus on what Scripture clearly calls us to do when we come together:

1. We will pray.
2. We will sing together.
3. We will sit under the reading and preaching of God’s Word.
4. We will observe the sacraments—the Lord’s Supper and baptism—twice over these four weeks, as part of our normal rhythm.

And that’s it.

This does not mean:

• That “body life,” local and global missions, or discipleship opportunities are unimportant.
• Or that communication about these things will disappear from church life altogether.

It does mean:

• That for this focused season, our gathered worship time will be aimed squarely at beholding Christ—without as much noise or clutter.
• That we want to feel what happens when some of our familiar “extras” are removed, so we can see more clearly what has been shaping us all along.

To borrow the image from the conversation:
It’s like turning on the defroster so the windshield clears and you can really see the road.

What This Isn’t—and What We Hope It Will Be
This series is not a way to earn a spiritual promotion.

We’re not saying:
“If you do these four things perfectly for four weeks, you’ll finally make the A team of Christians.”

Instead, we’re affirming:

• Christ alone removes our sin.
• Christ alone provides the righteousness that gives us a place in God’s presence.
• Christ is both our example and our substitute.

These simple practices—prayer, singing, the Word, and the sacraments—are not ways to earn God’s favor. They are graces given so that, as people already loved and redeemed in Christ, we can walk in His ways and delight in Him.

Our hope is that, for the average Westover member who “just comes on Sunday,” this series will be:

• A breath of fresh air and rest in a noisy world,
• A reconnection with God,
• And a gentle but clear call to re-engage—not as consumers, but as worshipers.

Looking Ahead
As we step into this series together, we invite you to:

• Come with open hands and open expectations.
• Notice what feels missing—and ask why that feels so significant.
• Lean into the simplicity and ask God to use it to reshape your heart.

Discipleship is more than just Sunday morning.
But what we do on Sunday deeply affects how we live, work, play, and learn the rest of the week.

Over these next four weeks, may the Lord use the Psalms—and the simple, beautiful basics of gathered worship—to help us see Him more clearly, respond to Him more honestly, and worship Him more fully.

Growing up in Greensboro, February and March were outlined by the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and surprise late-winter cold snaps. Easter sprang upon us with chocolate and pastel egg hunts, but without much warning. The cultural bustle drowned out any usefulness and significance of Ash Wednesday.

It hasn’t always been this way. Historically, a Christian’s calendar took a "gospel shape," with seasons intended to draw our attention to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Today, we have largely lost that rhythm. My goal isn't to shame us for a loss, but to invite us to reclaim and respond.

What is Worth Keeping?
Lent is the 40-day season leading to Easter where we identify with Christ’s journey to the cross. Ash Wednesday is the starting block. It is where we stand to begin a journey that ends with our church family shouting "Hallelujah!" at the empty tomb on Resurrection Sunday.

While Jesus knew the victory the Father had in store, he was fully aware of the journey ahead. The scripture describes Christ’s attitude about his crossward journey:

• “When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.” Luke 9:51
• “… who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,” Hebrews 12:2
• “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.” Isaiah 53:7

Setting Our Face Toward the Cross
How do we prepare our hearts for the reality of the Resurrection? While we can seek God anytime, Lent provides a defined timeframe to be intentional, and Ash Wednesday is a starting block. In Matthew 16:24, Christ said:
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”

Three Ideas for the Journey
To make yourself available to God’s shaping this season, consider these:

• FAST: This is the traditional Lent activity. You might fast from food for one meal a week or a full 24 hours (sundown to sundown). For those unable to fast from food, consider eliminating one weekly activity to devote time for prayer.
• PRAY: Devote specific time to pray for your faith, a lost friend, or global missions. Grab a friend or your small group to join you. 
• SERVE: We identify with the Son of Man who "came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." God connects our fasting to the needs of others in Isaiah: 

Don’t let another season pass by without leaning in. Together, let’s set our faces toward the cross.

That was the question set before us during our service this morning. As each of us consider how we answer that question, we want to make resources available to you that both supplement and facilitate whatever next step the Lord is leading you towards.

Charged with the Great Commission, Jesus’ command to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...”, Westover’s purpose is to develop maturing followers of Jesus Christ. As we live out that purpose, our vision is to be a church that both GATHERS and SCATTERS.

On the last Sunday of the calendar year, our Faith @ Home Sunday worship experience aims at emphasizing both aspects of our vision simultaneously. • Decorating
• Serving dinner and refreshments
• Supporting parents and caregivers at our respite area
• General event support

It’s going to be an Olympic-themed evening packed with games, friendly competitions, laughter, dinner, snacks, and community-building. This night is designed for moms and their sons to have fun and make memories together—and you can help make it happen!
Volunteer roles include:

• Running and assisting with various games
• Serving food and snacks
• Helping with setup and cleanup
• Supporting the flow of the night in general

If you like high-energy environments or love helping families connect, this is a great place to serve.

The Christmas season provides a perfect opportunity to be the church scattered, serving in our community, tangibly demonstrating the love of Christ. Below are a number of outreach opportunities available to us this year!

Pack a Box! Shoeboxes and instructions are available for pickup at the Local Missions Wall. There, you will also find an incredible team of volunteers ready and willing to answer any questions you may have or assist you, your friends, or family in getting involved.

Serve during National Collection Week (November 17-24)! 
Westover will be accepting boxes Monday, Nov. 17 - Friday, Nov. 21 (9am-noon), Saturday Nov. 22 (10am-noon), Sunday, Nov. 23 (1pm-4pm) and Monday, Nov. 24 (9am-noon).  We anticipate over 20,000 shoeboxes to be collected, boxed in crates, and loaded into trucks right here in our parking lot. Senior Resources of Guilford: We're collecting new, unopened items to donated to Senior Resources of Guilford. Items include: Blankets, canned goods, paper products, flashlights, hand / dish soap, toiletries, chapstick, socks, hats, gloves, scarves, individually wrapped snack foods and breakfast items.
The drop-off deadline for items donated to Senior Resources is December 3rd.

The Interactive Resource Center (IRC): Westover partners with the IRC, a local organization that comes alongside and helps meet the needs of those experiencing homelessness. We're looking for items (NEW) such as the following to be donated: Travel-sized toiletries, hand warmers, hats, gloves, scarves, men's and women's underwear, juice boxes, ponchos, plastic utensils, individually wrapped snack foods.
The drop-off deadline for items donated to the IRC is December 21st.

Help us show the love of Jesus to some of our homebound members, widows, widowers, and others who could use a little extra Christmas cheer! You can do this as an individual or join together with others. Visits can be anything from delivering a Christmas treat to singing Christmas carols. We encourage you to be as creative as you are able!

Because of Christ we GO! This Christmas Eve, Westover has a unique opportunity to serve the communities around us.

Singleness: Rooted in Christ

One Sunday morning message could never suffice to adequately cover the topic of Singleness in the Church.
 
The following is a list resources (all of which, in some way, contributed to today’s message) aimed at “setting the table” for continued conversation. Westover serves as a collection site for shoeboxes in the greater Greensboro area. During collection week (November 18–25), we are expecting to collect over 20,000 shoeboxes! We need a LOT of hands to help this happen.

Ring the Bell Volunteers are valuable assets in The Salvation Army’s efforts to meet the changing needs of our world! Westover Local Missions partners with The Salvation Army to provide bell-ringers at the Battleground WalMart on Fridays and Saturdays in December.

Join us for Westover's Christmas Eve services at 4pm* or 6pm! This will be an evening filled with heartfelt worship, a  Christmas message, and candlelight song. Gather with family and friends to embrace the spirit of Christmas and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with us.
