The Doris Henderson Newcomers School is a Guilford County public school for students who have recently arrived in the Unites States. When newcomers (in grades 3-12) arrive in Guilford County, they have the option of choosing to come to the Newcomers School for a year, where they can adjust to learning in an American school, living in American culture, and speaking English at school. Many of these recently arrived immigrant students are also refugees.

Westover has been give the opportunity to partner with this school by starting a Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Teachers from the school and members of “The Well” and  “The Vine” (Westover single adult ministries) have joined with the school through the PTA. The PTA allows us to get involved in the life of the school, meet students and  staff, and love them with the love of Christ! The PTA was formed in July 2009, and officiated in September 2009. Through this organization, we are able to love the students and staff through volunteer workdays, breakfasts for teachers, art supply collections for students, and monthly give-aways for teachers.
