Westover Deacons
What is a Deacon?The word Deacon comes from a New Testament terms meaning "servant" and "ministry". The first mention of Deacons is in Acts 6:1-7, when they are appointed to handle ministry and care for the needs of the local body of believers. The qualifications of a Deacon are outlined in 1 Timothy 3:8-13.What does a Deacon do?A Deacon provides ministry to those in the church who are in need. Deacons are responsible for the care and maintenance of the property of the church. They work with operations and facilities staff to provide oversight of janitors and administrative staff. They also handle routine fiscal matters relating to the general fund of Westover.Who are the Deacons and how are they selected?Candidates must be at least 25 years old and a member of the Church for at least one year. Active Deacons identify qualified individuals and presents them to the Elders, then to the membership of Westover for confirmation each year. Deacon candidates are selected by observing their life and ministry as they serve at Westover. There is a formal interview process with each candidate. Once confirmed by the Elders and membership these individuals serve a four-year term as Deacon.
